NaKKUT, —A very sudden and fatal accident occurred near here on Wednesday last, resulting in the death of a yonng woman for a long time residing at Nascby. It appears, as far as wc can learn, that Air Keenan, of the Ovens Hotel, was taking two drays, tied one behind the other, to the Kyeburn, where he has a farm. Miss Bridget Mungo van, who has an interest in the property, was sitting on the leading dray, Air Keenan, her brother-indaw, himself being in the dray following. At a sharp turn ami sidling a little beyond the Welcome Inn, by turning too sharply or too much up on the hill, the horses pulled the first dray over, probably the horses of the hindermost dray, the outer edge falling across the unfortunate woman. Mr Keenan tried ineffectually to raise the side, and then to dig under and prop. It was probably half an hour before sufficient assistance could be got. When Dr Dick, who had been sent for, arrived, ho found that the pulse was almost gone. A partial restoration was effected, and the sufferer was brought back to Naseby. Prom the first no hopes were held out of recovery, and early the following morning death ensued. —Wc have received authentic information that the General Government will probably agree to the extension of the telegraph line to the Dnnstan, via >St. Bathans and Blacks—should the Provincial Government guarantee interest on outlay. From the source from which we gather our information, it is probable the offer will be made.-- Chronicle. Cltdk.—An official inquiry into the circumstances attending the recent fire at the Garrick was held on the 12th instant before the District Coroner, Dr Corse, and the following verdict waa returned That the said house was wilfully, feloniously, and maliciously destroyed by fire by some person or persons at present unknown.”—Wo are given to understand that the petition from the Dnnstan district, in favor of the extension of the railway from Tuapeka to Cromwell, and forwarded during the week to his Honor the Bnpriiitcndent to he presented to the House of Representatives, contained 3-18 signatures. —Tire Bendigo Reefs are reported to have the most encouraging appearance. Excepting Logan and Company’s, who are now en-, gaged crushing some really good stone —five ounces to the ton is expected to be realised — there is no one claim in particular deserving more notice than another. The source from which we glean our information says that Bendigo is looking up, and it ia expected that, in the summer months, a large population will be located ther e.—Dnnstan Time*.
The Lakes. —There is very little doubt that but for Mr Handera's accident, which prevented him visiting the outlying districts, he would have defeated Mr Fyke. At Macetown, Gibbstown, Gardrona, and Shotover, Mr Pyke polled 81 against Mr Manders’s 5 ; but at all the other booths, Arrowtown excepted, the latter had majorities.—The Mail reporter has paid a visit to the Shotover Company’s claim, and from his account we learn that the \vash-dirt varies from three to five feet thick. Nearly two hundred trucks, or about 180 tons arc taken out daily ; but lately, owing to want of timber and the races being frozen up, many hands have been discharged. The wash-dirt averages about five dwts. to the truck, A crab hole yielding two truoksfull was last week cleared out and gave 36ozs. The late discovery of a fresh bottom under the false one that was being first worked, arose through putting down a prop on to the rock bottom. It adds largely to the value of the claim.
