Eggs are now more plentiful, and retailing at Is 4d to Is 6d per doz. But little change has taken place in prices during the week. This is, perhaps, attributable to the slack demand, no one in the interior who can avoid it being desirous of adding to his stock at present rates of carriage. The approach of spring and the prospect of better roads, and, perhaps a little slackness in loading have, however, caused a downward tendency in cartage. Sugars are unaltered. In tea very little is doing. In oilmen’s stores quotations are unchanged, and wines and spirits are held for former rates. A large sale of American goods took place at Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn and Co.’s stores on Friday. Resin was bought in at 10s 6d per cask. For 50 barrels of dried apples bid per lb, was refused. It was explained by the chairman that the country shareholders had intimated they agreed with the resolutions adopted at the last meeting of the company, with the exception of the one which limited the number of up-country directors to two, they desiring to have five, and thinking {that the number of town directors should be five. It was agreed to adopt the
suggestion, and the meeting proceeded to elect | seven town directors, the following being appointed i-Messrs Law, Ramsay, Davie, Reid, Eawson and Dunning The directory is Messrs Holman, Haley, FritchanDaus, and Roskrudge. In answer to a shareholder who wished to know whether it was a fact that the company had not sufficion land to carry on theh effectively, the chairman .aid the eround had now been acquired, as well as a wfttw-race bv which they would be able to use water powerinstead of steam. The directors would at once proceed to register the company, and get to work as quickly as possible. At an influential meeting last evening, it was decided to form a new insurance company, to be styled the National Fire and Marino Insurance Company of New Zealand with a capital of L 500,000, in 50,000 shares of LlO each, with power to increase the capital, if n****** »? another half-million. About one-fourth of the capital was subscribed in the room, and the number of shares applied for up to this morning was 20 000. The proposed company is being formed in no hostile spirit towards any existing local institutions, but to supply a much felt want; it having been established that the New Zealand and South British Companies are by reason of the largeness of their business, unable to accept all the risks that are offered to them. That the company will be a success is beyond question, and its formation is opportune, because there is a vast amount of capital in the Colony only awaiting In proof of this latter?assertion, we may mention that nearly L 15.000 more than was required was offered for investment with the New Zealand Shipping Company.
