The Gazette issued to-day appoints th( following gentlemen Justices of the Peace : Mr A. N. Campbell, Hokanui; Mr C Flexman, Dunedin ; Mr 'I homas Perkins, Invercargill; Mr Louis Thoneman, Dun edin.
Returns published in the Gazette, show that the value of the imports of the Co!on\ for the quarter ended on June 30 was L 1,690,685, as against L 1,028,630 for the corresponding quarter of 187*2. 'lhe vako of the exports during the same period was L 1,043,072, as against L 1,237,740 for th< corresponding quarter of 1872. The vessels entered inwards during the quarter were 161, of an aggregate tonnage of 62,079 tons, and crews numbering 2,611 men, as against 185 vessels, 66,951 tons, and 3,149 men for the corresponding quarter of 1872. The shipping returns outwards were as follows :—Vessels. 182; tonnage, 72,336; crews, 2,972. For the corresponding quarter of 1872 the figure? were: Vessels, 194; tonnage, 74,569; crews, 3,415, The coal barque Anno Melhuish missed stays and went aground at the Heads. The steamer Wellington went to her assistance, towed her off, and brought her into port. Part of her keel is broken off, and she has two and a-half feet of water in her hold, but no serious damage baa been done her. The captain of the Wellington reports that the Rangitoto is sitting on an even keel, and is apparently little injured. The William Tapscott inquiry before the Governor was continued to-day. August 22. Mr Falrclough’s readings are badly attended.

August 22. The Herald acknowledges the receipt of a solicitor’s letter, threatening an action for libel for its strictures on Mr Dargaville. It corrects one statement, but reiterates the others, and declines to apologise. A laborer, named Charles Pearce, fell over a cliff at Fort Britomart, and smashed his He was killed instantaneously.
Napier, August 21
A special messenger from Poverty Bay reports that the session of the Court there been adjourned fora week. The proceedings were entirely stopped by Henare Matua and party, and a fracas occurred, during which the constables were roughly handled. The agitation was partly allayed by Mr Locke. Instructions from the Governor are anxiously awaited.
Nasery, August 21. A woman named Bridget Mongovau died at Keenan’s Shamrock Hotel, this morning, from the effects of a dray capsizing while on heriwayto the Kyeburn diggings. An inquest will be held to-morrow. She was an old resident, and was well known in the district. .
