THE POULTRY SHOW.

To the Editor. you were surprised at not seeing more barndoor fowls exhibited by farmers, and 1 suppose small settlers as well. I feel sure, sir, had a market for the sale of fish, fruit, vegetables, and poultry been established in Port Chalmers, a Urge number of exhibits would have come from this and tho surrounding districts alone. At present there is no inducement held out to the small settlers to cultivate vegetables, salads, &e., or to oreed poultry, there being no way of selling them unless they hawk them from door to door, and for this they must pay a license Many ■would think it no disgrace to bring their produce to market, who would not or could not go hawking, Thus we are left to the China-

men for vegetables, and as for fish and poultry we seldom get a sight of either. We have plenty of shell-fish at our very doors almost, but no market to sell them in. How can we expect the merchants and gentry to have their marine residences at Port Chalmers when even fresh fish could not be obtained ? If we expect them and their families to reside here we must have a market. Again, we have a number of fine ships at the railway pier. Should any number of extra visitors go on board to dine, fish or poultry must be bespoke some days before. Yet, we sometimes call this the principal sea port of New Zealand. Then, again, our Mechanics’ Institute is closed at present, and the public baths seem quite forgotten. Trusting this may help to stir up those who should look to such matters, I am, &c., Grumbler.
