The amount of revenue received at the Cus-tom-house on goods cleared for consumption this day. was L 298 lls lid. Considering the season of the year, the demand for most goods has been good, and prices fully maintained. The stock of sugars on hand is light compared with the demand, and as the new crop cannot arrive until October, prices may be expected to rule high. Quotations, under the circumstances, cannot safely be given. In teas there have been heavy trans actions at full prices. A line of De Roubaix candles, slightly damaged, fetched 10j|d nett cash at auction. In brandy the stock is light, and the recent advices from Melbourne have caused an advance of from 3d to Gd per gallon. The European news received by the last mail, coupled with the small quantities held, justify the expectation that quotations may rule still higher. No change can be quoted in rice. In those goods likely to be affected by the new tariff, prices are not yet settled. Matches are held for an advance, as well as several other articles of general consumption; but in the present unsettled state of the market, values cannot be safely given. The change in the mode of collecting duties by percentage on their valr.e on goods hitherto paid by measurement, la gradually commending itself to mercantile men. When first it was made known, many were disposed to regard it unfavorably; but since the incidence of taxation became Hie subject of accurate calculation, the principle of ad valorem duties has gradually commended itself to favorable acceptance, and the feeling amongst merchants is, that a revision of the tariff is advisable, with a view to reducing the excessive duties on articles of general consume tion in families, which have hitherto esc' "q attention.
