ALARMING INCREASE OF PAUPERISM.

Those who regard the United States as a kind of paradise of the poor, a land flowing with milk and honey, where no one need want, will be surprised to learn that the management of paupers is giving almost as much concern to social reformers in New York as it is among ourselves. At a conference of superintendents of the poor held at Albany, some statements were made which give a suggestive view of the alarming proportion already assumed by pauperism in the older portion of the Union. It was stated, fori nstance, that in the State of New York alone property amounting in value to nearly L 5,000,000 sterling is held by the public charities, and that nevertheless one in every 150 of the population is a pauper.
