THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND THE NEW TARIFF.

A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day, to take into consideration the new tariff. Mr Oliver presided, and eighteen members were present. In indicating the business to be transacted, the Chairman said from enquiries instituted by him he learnt that the effect of the new tariff would be to greatly increase the duties on certain classes of goods. The duties on iron and hardware would be more than doubled; on drapery, the effect would be the very same; on earthenware and glass, 200 per cent, increase; on boots and shoes, 100 per cent; on fancy goods 150 per cent. ; instead of receiving L 40,00() increase from the new duties, as the Treasurer expected, the increase would be from L200,0t)0 to 1.250,000. The present time was a very inopportune one to resort to the system of ad valorem duties, as prices were now unusually high. The reasons urged by the Premier were insuffi-

cicnt to warrant resorting to so sweeping a change. He read some figures to show the changes in the incidence of taxation, the effect being to establish a great increase in the duties ou furniture, drapery, hardware, earthenware, ironmongery, fancy goods, &c, Mr Driver asked for information as to the reductions the new tariff effected. He said unless it was shown that the tariff was anything in the shape of protection he was in favor of the alteration. Mr .Rattray moved—“ That the attention of the Otago members of the Assembly be drawn to the great increase of taxation of the Colony involved in the proposed alteration of the tariff, and that information upon this subject collected by the Chamber be printed, and furnished to them.” Mr Turnbull moved as an amendment, to the effect, “ That the Chamber affirmed the proposal to levy ad valorem duties ; and that a committee be appointed to consider whether the duty was generally increased or not; if so, to suggest a reduction, of tho rata.” (Left sitting.)
