Though the 21st ult. was one of the briehtest of the season in Sydney, a star was visible at noon. The phenomenon excited great interest. The enormous sum of L 12,100,490 was raised last year for the maintenance of the poor in England and Wales, and of this amount L 8,007,403 was spent in actual relief. Professor Tyndall has succeeded, by the aid of a column of water two hundred and sixty feet high, in compressing air to oneeighth its original volume. When allowed to escape it rushed out so violently as to cause so intense a cold that the- moisture in the room was congealed into a shower of snow, while the pipe whence the air issued was edged with icicles. The Athanasian Creed is an object of Earl Russell’s special aversion ; and the famous Council of Nice, he says, “ was the signal for centuries of bloodshed ; thousands of human beings died to confirm or contradict a doctrine which none of them understood !” The 1 old Earl waxes more valiant every year ; he is now eighty-one; what will he be at ninety ?
