SUEZ MAIL SERVICE.

To the Editor. Sik, —In perusing your paper last evening, the report of what took place between the deputation from the Chamber of Commerce and his Honor the Superintendent respecting the Suez mail service particularly engager} my attention, especially Mr ©liver’s statement that the second telegram from Mr Vogel explained that Messrs M'Meckan ami Blackwood would not enter into any other temporary contract than, I presume, that for carrying the Suer, mails via Hokitika. Perhaps I may be allowed to state that in May last 1 was in conversation with Captain M'Lean on the probability of the mail contract; The captain informed me that he was then authorised by Messrs M'Meckan and Blackwood to submit to tbe Vogel Ministry an offer for the conveyance of tbe Suez mails via Bluff, but that he had heard Mr Vogel wished the mails carried via Hokitika ; if so, it would not be nearly so convenient for the steamers, and in all probability would involve a larger subsidy. Relying upon Captain M ‘Lean’s statement as correct, how is it tbe General Government, in trying to clear themselves of any blame for the injustice to these Provinces, now endeavor to shif(j that blame on to the shoulders of Messrs M'Meckan and Blackwood ? Perhaps you can explain to your reakers, and oblige—Yours, &c., Henry Hay man, Of P. Hay man and Co. Rattray street, July 18.
