THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

* Mr Thonetnan addressed the ratepayers of High Ward last evening at the Mission house, Russell street, and, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, the meeting was well attended. Mr Daniel Gilchrist was chairman. At the close of the address the candidate returned satisfactory answers to numerous questions put to him by the electors. Mr George C. Challis proposed and Mr James Kiuvig seconded an unanimous vote of confidence in the candidate. Subsequently he met a crowded meeting at Baxter’s Hotel, Maitland street—Mr James Morrison in the chair. A similar vote of confidence was proposed by Mr Thomas Condon, seconded by Mr Alexander luglie, and carried unanimously. Ho finally proceeded to the Rising Sun Hotel, where an equally large number of ratepayers were present—Mr W. P. Woodifield presiding. After an address of some length, which met with the approbation of all present, Mr Mark Walkem (moved, and Mr Wm. Thomas seconded the following motion: —“That Mr L. Thoneman is the most suitable of the three candidates to occupy the Mayor’s chair for the ensuing year.” The motion was carried by acclamation. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings. Mr Mercer’s meeting last night at the Bull and Mouth Hotel, Maclaggau street, was numerously attended notwithstanding the bad weather, the large room and passage being crowded. Mr M‘Donald presided. Mr Mercer referred to the extensive offers, amounting to L 37,000, which had been made to take up the new Municipal loan of L 12,500, and said the Council had accepted tenders to the full amount required, at an average of Llollos. This announcement was evidently verygratifyingto the meeting, being received with cheers. At the close,' Mr Arthur Smith proposed, and Mr Hammond seconded a resolution that Mr Mercer was the proper person to be elected Mayor on- Monday next. The motion was carried by everyone present holding up their hands in its favor, succeeded by acclamation. The majority of those present then adjourned to the Committee Room to perfect their arrangements for the polling day.
