POST-PRANDIAL FERVOUR.—THE ORANGE DINNER.

To the Editor. Sir,— l see by the papers that an Orange Society is in existence here—how long I don’t know. The members held a dinner on Saturday night last, and the notice of the dinner was the first intimation to the general public of the existence of such a society in Dunedin. The paragraphs are evidently not those of a reporter. lam very much mistaken if they have not been furnished to the papers. One point is observable at the first glance, and that is that the mention of the names of those present was scrupulously avoided. Why did they not publish their names ? Why, the very chairman’s name was not given. We read that the valiant Johnston of Ballykilbeg—(where is that?) — was duly toasted ; and I want to know, you know, who toasted him. Does Protestantism, to sustain itself, need the aid of a body which will not even put its chairman’s name into print ? If it can’t dispense with such fearless and invaluable assistance, it must be in a sorry plight. Again, I ask who are those pot-valiant and doughty champions that are afraid to make public their names ? Come forward yc brave ones—no one will knock ye down with a big stick—though the public may laugh your ridiculous chivalry away. Though not one of the mysterious thirty, still my cry is “ Htjrroo for King Billy." Dunedin, July 17.
