THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

Mr Mercer’s two meetings last night were again mi usually well attended, the rooms and adjoining passages being crowded. The candidate was aocotded a flattering reception in each instance. At the first meeting, held at Baxter’s Maitland Hotel, Mr Cooper occupied the chair, and a proposition that Mr Mercer was the most fit and proper person to occupy the Mayoral chair for the next year, was proposed by Mr Alexander Lawson, seconded by Mr Joseph Smith, and carried unanimously. At the second meeting, held at Fagan’s Carriers’ Arms Hotel, Princes street south, Mr A. Macdonald in the chair, the same vote was proposed by Mr Wm. Davidson, seconded by Mr Andrew Watson, and carried unanimously. Mr Thoneman addressed a large meeting of the ratepayers of Bell Ward at M'Gregor’s British Hotel, George street, Mr W. S. Douglas being in the chair. On the motion of Mr R. Macleod, seconded by Mr J. Seager, an unanimous vote of confidence in the candidate was carried. The Leith Ward committee increased their number by thirty at the conclusion of the meeting at the Caledonia Hotel, Mr Barnes’s meeting last evening at the York Hotel, George street, was a most unprecedented success, the room being crowded. The candidate addressed those present on the various subjects connected with the Mayoral office in a very plain and explicit manner. It was proposed by Mr Bacon and seconded by Mr Keast, that Mr Barnes is the most fit and proper person to fill the Mayoral chair for the following year, which was carried uanimously. Mr Barnes subsequently adjourned to Campbell’s Crown Hotel, Rattray street, where the success that attended his first meeting was equally good. The usual vote of confidence was proposed by Mr Bunce and seconded by Mr Langley, and was carried with great applause, after which the already large committee was again increased,
