PORT CHALMERS.
NOMINATION FOR MAYOR. The nomination for Mayor for Port Chalmers took place at twelve o’clock to-day, in the Town Hall. The only candidate was Mr Hugh M'Dermid, who was proposed by Mr George Fasten and seconded by Mr W. Innes. Mr Dench, the retiring Mayor, then declared Mr M'Dermid duly elected. Mr M'Dermid briefly returned thanks, and said that on account of a requisition he received, signed by seventy-two electors of all classes of the town, he came forward. He thanked them for the position in which they had placed him. Mr Dench, the retiring Mayor, said tne only thing he regretted was that ho had not retired from the office twelve months ago. He would, however, come forward as a candidate for High Ward; and he sincerely hoped the Council would improve, for it had degenerated most lamentably during the last twelve months.
A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the proceedings.
