THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

Mr Thoneman addressed a crowded meet ing of the ratepayers of Leith Ward last evening, at White’s Queen’s Hotel, Albany street. Mr P. Gibson presided. The candidate was well received, and after having addressed the meeting at considerable length on the various matters affecting the ratepayers, Mr Baker moved, “ That Mr Thoneman is the most fit and proper candidate to occupy the Mayor's chair,” which waa seconded by Mr Thomas Fraser, and carried unanimously. He afterwards met the ratepayers of South Ward at the Peacock Hotel; Mr Lowry in the chair. Having expressed his views satisfactorily to those present, Mr !’. W. Shepherd proposed, and Mr Geo. Gow seconded, an unanimous vote of confidence in the candidate. At the termination of each meeting about twenty names were added to the committee. Mr Mercer’s meeting last night at the Mission-house, Eusscll street, was well attended, the place being filled. Mr J. Brown occupied the chair. Mr J. P. Millar proposed, and Mr Kussell seconded a motion that Mr Mercer is the most fit and proper person to fill the office of Mayor for the ensuing year, which was carried unanimously. A second meeting at Martin’s Hotel, Staf-ford-street, was also crowded; Mr James Muir being in the chair. An unanimous vote of confidence was parsed, on the motion of Mr John Curie, seconded by Mr Wo. Davidson. At each place numerous additions of active partisans were made to the committee. Mr John Barnes addresed a crowded meeting at Keligher’s European Hotel, George street, last evening. The candidate was received in a most enthusiastic manner. After a number of important questions were pat and answered to the great satisfaction of the meeting, the usual vote of confidence was carried unanimously.
