CIIRISTCHURC'H, July 7. ; The quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day. There are twelve oases, including two cases of manslaughter, three embezzlement, one forgery, one horsestealing, -one arson, one obtaining money under false pretences, one larceny as a bailee, and two of assault. Four cases are charges against one prisoner. ' His Honor, in his charge to the Grand Jury, brought under their notice the facts in the case of Eegina v. Crisp, a case of manslaughter, in which, owing to the negligent driving of a cca,oli, a man lost his life, The lav/ in such cases was that it is the duty of every man who drives a carriage to do so with such care, and caution as to prevent as far as possible injury to any person. If death ensued to any person through rapidity of driving or the driver’* want of caution, he would be guilty pf manslaughter. In the case of Stiffe the question the jury would harefca consider was whether the death of deceased was by the treatmeut he refjeiyfid fsom prisoners; if so, whether Wflh treatment was negligent or unnecessarily violent. His Honor then referred to the proposed additions to the Supreme Court, and also to the building of a drunkards’ ward, which he hoped would soon be completed. The Crown Prosecutor withdrew the indictment against Mrs Hill and Dr Parker, in Stiffe’s case, prosecuting only Miss Herberte and Hill. Mr Oat was offered L 1,500 for the horse, but refused it. The outward mail will be conveyed to Meibourne m twelve days from Dunedin, eleven from Lytteltmi nine irom Wellington, and six and-adialf Hokitika. The steamer Paterson is to convey from Nelson the inward mails for New Plymouth and Auckland, and to convey the outward maU from those places to Nelson , the timeto the Manukau to be nine days. The exception in the latter case is for the Manukau bar and the prevailing westerly wmds lhe service Trill be commenced at Melbourne onthe anival of the English mail due there on the Bth inti, and at Dunedin for the outward mail on August 1. •
