MAYORAL ELECTION.
Mr John Barnes addressed a large meeting of the ratepayers of Leith Ward, at Cotter’s Caledonian Hotel, last evening, at which Mr B. H. Leary presided. A number of important questions were put to the candidate, which were answered in a most satisfactory manner. Mr Butterfield proposed that Mr Barnes is the most fit and proper person to fill the office of Mayor for the ensuing year. It was seconded by Mr Hardie, and carried unanimously. A meeting of the friends and supporters of Mr L, Thoneman, in hi* candidature for the office of Mayer, was held last evening at the Empire Hotel There were about sixty gentlemen present. Mr fl. S. Fish, jun., was voted to the chair. A general committee was formed, consisting of ninety ratepayers, and Mr Councillor Woodland was elected permanent chairman. Ward committees were then appointed, and the following elected chairmen for the various Wards, viz. South Ward, Mr W. Watson ; High Ward, Mr Councillor Ramsay ; Bell Ward, Mr J. U. Russell; and Leith Ward, Mr Peter Gibson. After transacting some routine business, the meeting adjourned to an early day next week. _
