Brig: Derwent. Three-masted schooner: Elderslie. At the Railway Pier:—Ships : Naomi, Michael Angelo, J. N. Fleming. Barque : Horatio Sprague. Theketch Huon Belle, for Gatlin’s River, and the fore-and-after Friendship, for Moeraki, were the only departures this forenoon. The Wallabi, which has been laid up for some time in Dunedin undergoing repairs, sails again this evening for the Bluff. On Saturday last the deputy health officer, Dr J. T. Bouse, and the Commissioners left Lyttelton in the s.s. Mullogh to visit the Edwin Fox, news having been brought up at 8 a.m. by the pilot crew that sickness was on board. On arriving near the vessel, which was then somejfive miles from the Heads, an inquiry was made, and it was found that there had been six deaths during the passage —two from accident, two from fever, one from consumption, one (an infant) from thrush. At the present time there are three cases of fever (called, by the surgeon, Dr Walshe, simple continuous fever), and a number of convalescent patients. Under these circumstances the authorities deemed it advisable to place the vessel in quarantine ; fresh provisions were placed on board, and the steamer returned to port to make arrangements for towing the ship up. The s.s. Gazelle was chartered, and proceeded to the Heads and towed the ship up to an anchorage off the quarantine station. She is one of the teakbuilt Moulinain traders, and originally shiprigged, but her cross-Jack yard has been taken off, and she is now a barque. The barracks were ready for the reception of the immigrants last'night, and the debarkation of the passengers was to be commenced next morning in the ship’s own boats. The ship will afterwards be thoroughly fumigated. The names of the persons who died are Thomas Roberts (married), George Bennett (sihgle), both from fever; Sarah Welch (single), consumption; an infant of Mr Jesse Brook, Henry Strawbridgo, A.B. ; D. F. Lungley, killed in the Bay of Biscay.— Lyttelton Times, June 30.
