FREEMASONRY AND THE TABLET.

To the Editor. Sir, —Some thoughtless individuals have been circulating a report about town for the last few days, anent some extracts from a work on Freemasonry in last week's Tablet, that a traitorous brother has been revealing the secrets of the craft. Now, Sir, if those people would only take the trouble to read the article in question, they would find that it is simply a review of a work on Freemasonry, which can, no doubt, be purchased at some of our book shops. I'hat it evinces very bad taste in the conductors of that journal to interfere in such matters, every right-thinking man will admit; and that it has a tendency—in a mixed community like ours—to foment illfeeling amongst neighbors, must be apparent to the most shallow intellect. But this is no reason why the innocent should suffer by the shafts of calumny, or Catholics be insulted as a whole for the action of a few. There are many members of the old faith who can "act on the square" with their Protestant brethren, and these at least should not be the recipients of insult from credulous discov«rers of "mares' nests." I have no object to serve in taking up the cudgels for either side, as I am merely an "itinerant scribe " and a Heretic. Dunedin, July 1.
