The amount of revenue received at the Cus-tom-house on goods cleared for consumption f.hia day, was L 333 16s Bd. Melbourne.— I The markets have ruled entirely without animation to-day, and the approach of the half-yearly balance is now being assigned as a reason for postponing free purchases. Breadstuffs are very firm, an outside demand for flour serving to clear all the offerings of fine brands j we hear of 200 tons being taken up to-day at a full rate ; best marks are quoted at Ll4 5s to Ll4los. In wheat there is not much doing, arrivals from the interior are light, and the demand is not active. Sales are mentioned at 6s 6d. Feeding corn is steady. Maize is the turn against buyers, to-day’s quotations being 4s 6cl to 4s 7d. Oats have not been dealt in ; there are very few offering. Bran has been a good deal run after, and about 12.000 bushels were bought up at Is 8d to Is 9d, purchases which pretty well clear the market, and an advance is now sought for trade parcels. Teas command more notice, and negotiations are at an advanced stage towards completion for several lines. Blasting powder has been operated in on a liberal scale; it is reported that equal to 3,000 quarter-barrels Kame’s were placed with one buyer at a satisfactory price. Quicksilver was quitted at is.—Age, June 7. San Francisco.— The San Francisco Market Review of 14th March remarks as follows on barley“ Transactions for the week include 10.000 sacks choice brewing at Idol 40c ; 5,000 sacks do, to arrive, Idol 37 £c. We note small trade sales of coast within the ranse of Idol 25c to Idol 30c, according to quality. It is stated that our total stock in the State is 300.000 centals, of this 2,500 is chevalier. The great bulk is coast, and more or less dark and rusty.” The same journal, in its issue of 7th March, makes a somewhat humorous reference to the visit of some New Zealand brewers, in the following terms “We remark an improved feeling in the barley market, partly speculative, but attributable in some degree to the appearance of several New Zealand brewers in our market, arriving here by the Moses Taylor, and after hastily visiting several of our leading breweries, and leaving discretionary orders here for the purchase and shipment of chevalier and other choice brewing bailey, returned by the same steamer to the colonies from whence they came, being accompanied as far as Honolulu by one of our grain sharps and the prince of barley operators in this market. He will certainly be well posted on his return to us thirty days hence.” The San Francisco Commercial Herald, 28th March, states that “the barley market does not hold its own, although there are four small vessels on the berth loading for the Colonies. It is possible 3,000 tons in all will be shipped to New Zealand and Melbourne, and that of the very finest quality, and of which our supply is comparatively fight. The great bulk of our surplus stock consists mainly of coast, dark and rusty, which is very difficult of sale at any price. It is not even liked for ground feed.” _______
