WASTE LAND BOARD.

The weekly meeting of the Board was held to-day. Present—Messrs Tolmie, Butterworth, Clark, and Thomson. A communication was read from the Warden, Tokomairiro district, complaining that the roadway along the banks of the Tokomairiro River was being rapidly undermined by the removal of sand for building purposes. The Board was asked to interfere and prevent the damage. After deliberation, it was resolved that the Board should decline to interfere. Application was made by Mr Jas. Smith for leave to purchase a portion of the commonage forming block 1, Waitabuna West, so as to enable him to erect a fence round his property. The application was entertained, and applicant ordered to forward a survey of the ground for the information of the Board. Application was made for exchange of the following leases :—William Williams, sections 66, 65, 62, and 67, block I, Leaning Rockdistrict—adjourned; Win. Williams sections 10 and 25, block 1, Leaning Rock district —granted; John Gossan, sections 5 and 6. block*2. Teviot—granted; Thomas M‘Donnell, sections 22, 23, 33, 34. 35, 76, 82, and 83, block 7, Shotoverdistrict—granted; Wm. Sabine, sections 16, 17, 18, 19, block 2, and ditto sections 14 and 15, ditto Shotover district—ad j ourned. Wm. Butler applied for sections 61, 62, 63, 64, block 8, Shotover district, held in lease by him. Application granted, but refused as regards the other sections applied for by the same applicant. George Miller applied for section 1, block 18, Shotover district. Application granted. A license was applied for by Mr W. H. Valpy to occupy five acres, being part of section 18, block 9, Maungatua district, as a paddock for depasturing a horse. The Board had no

objection to the application. An application from Mr Luks, Waihemo, for the opinion of the Board as to his position with respect to a right granted Sir F. D. Bell to carry a water-race through his freehold property, was read and considered. The applicant was referred for advice to his own law agent. Mr S. W. Smith renewed his application to have a water license granted in the Waikouaiti district, the original application having been made previous to the passing of the Waste Lands Act, 1872. The application was referred to the Government. Messrs Gillies and Street applied, on behalf of Messrs Borton and M‘Master, to purchase eighty acres of run 206 for homestead purposes. The application was made under the 150 th clause of the Waste Lands Act, 1872. Kef erred to the District Land Officer. Mr A. C, Begg applied, on behalf of Mr William Thomson, for a coal mining lease of section 4, block 9, Leaning Hock District, comprising seven acres, the lease to be granted for a period of ten years. The application was granted on the usual terms, for a period of fourteen years, at a rental of L 7 os per annum, the price Jo be charged for coal at the pit’s mouth not to be more than 20s per ton. An application from the Canterbury and Otago Association for an agricultural lease on run 250 was referred to the District Lund Officer.
