WHO WAS RIGHT?
To the Editw. Sir, —Your correspondent, "J.P.," purposely confounds my position as your reporter with my legal position, and evidently knew in his first letter who I was. As regards- the report tc which he refers, he dare not deny its correctness. If, as I suspect, "J.P." and the present acting Resident Magistrate at Port Chalmers are one and the same person, I must respectfully decline entering into a newspaper controversy with him ; more particularly as I do not give him credit for thoroughly comprehending the legal construction cf sections 47, 48, 49, and 50 of the " Resident Magistrate's Act, 1867," read consecutively, notwithstanding the acumen so flatteringly attributed to him on a recent occasion. Should I, however, be wroug in my surmise, let J. P. avow himself by giving his real name, and I will take the earliest oppor-. tunity of apologising to the acting Resident Magistrate.—l am, Ac, Thos. A. Mansford. Port Chalmers, June 17.
