THE SUPERINTENDENCY.

To the Editor.

Sir— lt is really a farce to see Mr Gillies jumping the country, with Constitutionalism ppd Principle as his motto, for it is well known that when Mr Macandrew was elected Superintendent, Mr Gillies stated publicly that he would never take any office while Mr Macandrew was Superintendent. A man that has such an idea of principle would surely be expected to act up to his word. Bat did he do so ? With shame, 1 confess he did the very opposite. Instead of not taking office under Mr Macandrew, he grasped at the first chance that was ever offered him. He acted as Special Commissioner for the Goldfields, and received L 3 3s a day for his services, Mr Macandrew meanSuperintendent. Is it not also notorious that Mr Gillies was nominated by Mr Beid for the Treasurership, no doubt with his content; but Mr Macandrew, remembering his promise not to serve under him, thouglt't would be better for the Province and Mr Gillies’s reputation if he refused to sanction the apSintment, which he very wisely did ? Let r Gillies and his friends say little about principle after this, because there is no Dottd of sympathy between them. I ask working-men not to be deceived bj such clap-trap. Let them support the mai who has done the most for them, and I veu tore to say Mr Gillies will not be the man Pf their choice.—l am, &c, Alpha, PlWMfcb JUO« li >
