PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTION.

To the Editor. Sir, — It has been very ill-judged on the part of the friends of Mr E. B, Cargill that they should have allowed him to be nominated as a representative for the City in the Provincial Council under the present circumstances. By doing so they are, in a manner, holding up his name to ridicule, for, in consequence of his not being present among us to look after his own interests, he is certain to be near the foot of the poll. Had he been here himself, however, it would have been different, and he would have been returned to a certainty. From information I have received, I believe Mr E. B. Cargill will apt return to Dunedin for live or si*

months to come, by which time it is to be hoped the present difficulty will have been got over, and it will have been decided whether his Honor the Superintendent or Vlr Donald Reid is to govern the Province. Moreover, I believe the steps taken by Mr Cargill’s professed friends are quite unknown to himself, and there is reason to believe that were he aware of what they have done he would at once authorise his name to be withdrawn.

Under these circumstances, I would most resp ctfully advise the electors not to vote for Mr E. B. Cargill at the forthcoming election, —I am, &c., Progress. Dunedin, June 7.
