QUARTERLY LICENSING MEETING.

Last Tuesday the Licensing Court was held. The presiding Justices were Messrs Fish, Black, Ward, Leary, Fulton, Larnach, and Captain Fraser. Mr J. N. Watt, R.M., was Chairman. J. H. Jones applied for a general license for a new house in the St. Kilda district. Mr Wilson appeared in support of the application, and Mr Stewart, on behalf of the residents in the neighborhood, opposed. Memorials for and against the application. were read and considered, and counsel heard, after which the license was granted by a majority. E. W. Sheppherd applied for and obtained a general license for the Exchange Hotel, Walker street. M. Bolland applied for renewal of license for a house situated in Stafford street. Mr Harris for the applicant. The application was refused by a majority. Alex. Muir applied for a renewal for the Old England Hotel, Stuart street. Mr Harris supported the application, and produced a memorial signed by fifty-three residents in the neigh- * borhood in favor of it. The Bench refused the application. H. Fairbank made a similar application. Mr M*Keay supported the application, and Mr Harris opposed it. The application was granted, subject to certain improvements being made upon the building. Removal of licenses were granted to H, Ross and D. Wood, (For continuation of news see supplement.)
