The amount of revenue received at the Cus-tom-house on goods cleared for consumption this day, was L 797 4s 2d. The amount of gold duty received at the Customs to-day was L 641 9s 6d, duty at the rate of 2s per oz. on 6,4150z5., transhipped by the Beautiful Star, for Lyttelton.

PORT CHALMERS RAILWAY,

The following are particulars of tha traffic returns from the 10th ult., the date upon which the line was taken over by the Government, to the 80th ult., both days inclusive jb 8. (1*

The highest amount received for passenger traffic during a single day was £lO2 Is, and the lowest £4 18s. The highest for goods traffic to Port Chalmers was £l2 11s 7d, and the lowest Is. From Dunedin, the highest during any one dav was £4O IGs Id, and the lowest £1 10* ‘ '

Messrs Driver, Stewart, and Co, repoit for the woek ending May 28; — Stock. —Pat Cattle : The weekly market was very poorly supplied, only about 25 head of medium quality and stores being yarded ; good quality would have brought an advance on late prices. We quote prime beef at 22s to 23s per 1001b. We have sold 80 head privately at full rates. Pat Sheep : About 600 medium quality merino wethers were penned, and sold at 8a 3d to 8s 9d. We quote prime mutton at 2kl to 2?d per lb. We have placed 300 oross-breds at lls 6d to 18s. Store Cattle : With the exception of a few odd lots, we have iio transactions to report, although there is a fair demand for grown quiet cattle at L2 to L 3 3s for cows, and L33s to L 4 4s for steers. Store Sheep : As the season advances transactions are becoming more limited, holders looking for prices in excess of buyers’ views. We have buyers at our quotations, say cross-bred wethers, lls to 12s 6d; ditto ew*s in lamb, 15s to 17s 6d; ditto lambs, 8s 6d to 9s ; merino wethers, under 8-tooth, 7s to 8s ; ditto, full-mouthed, 6a to 6s 6d ; ditto ewes in lamb, 8s to 10s; ditto old, 5s to 7s. ' ... Country Sales.— On the 23rd mst. we held a clearing sale for Mr W, Grey, Waihola, when, notwithstanding the adverse weather, a very large number of buyers from Dunedin and various parts of the country attended; competition therefore was brisk, and results were very satisfactory to the vendor. Doubtless the well known quality of Mr Grey’s stock tended in a great measure to swell the attendance, -as it is only at remote intervals farmers and graziers have the opportunity of obtaining at auction pure-bred stock such as was submitted on Friday last. Cattle : Dairy cows brought from L 3 5s to L 6 10s; heifers, L3toL 3 7s 6cl; yearlings, 365, and calves 15s each. Sheep: The first lot, a pen of 67 cross-bred wethers, realised 18s, ana 12 store do, lls 6d each Various pens of cross-bred wether and ewe lambs were then submitted, realising from 10s 6d to 25s each. Leicester ram lambs brought from L 5 5s to L 7 each. A pen of 6 well-bred LeicesterewesfetchedLS ss; the next pen of 5 do, reached L 6 10s. The two following pens brought respectively L 5 and L 4 5s each, while the last .pen of pure-bred owes, which were really fine animals, reach L 7 10s each. Full-mouthed Leicester ewes brought from LI to 355, 820 merino store wethers were also quitted at Ba. Horses: The first lot, a fine upstanding draught horse, was knocked down to Mr John Pinch, jun., at LSB 10s; while the second lot, another fine big bay horse, found a purchaser in Mr Imrie, at L 57. A young entire colt, by “ Lofty,” brought Lls; and a pair of nice colts; by Thane of Clyde, although small-looking, fetched L4O 10s. Saddle and harness horses brought from L 9 to Ll6; and a pony, by “Chevy,” fetched L 8 15s. Grain: 220 bags of oats brought 3s 4d per bushel, and 100 bags wheat were disposed of at 4s 5d ; 7 bags do, at 4s 2d, Grass seed reached 5s Bd, and clover seed Is 3d per lb. All the farm implements, drays, harness, saddles, &c., were disposed of at good prices. The furniture and household effects, however, owing to the lateness of the hour when the stock was cleared off, were not disposed of, but will shortly be submitted to auction.

Wool,— We held our usual weekly sale at our stores, Ratiray street, to-day, when about 40 bales, odd lots of greasy, were catalogued, of which 21 lots were disposed of at prices undernoted Scoured sorts are in very slight demand. Catalogue :—Greasy mixed, GG over L, 2 bales, 9d; do do, D&AM‘D, 1 do, 9Jd ; do locks, Spylaw, 1 do, 3|d ; do do, Hawea, 1 do, 3d ; do do, Eamsclough, 1 do, 3J|d; do pieces, do, 4 do, 4Jd ; do fleece, SU, 3 do, lOjpl ; do Sieces, do, 1 do, 6d; do, locks, do, 1 do, 3.Jd o fleece, Y over EWH, 2 do, 9sd; scoured fleece, Price, 1 do, 21^d; do locks, JBB in triangle, 2 do, Is. Sheepskins continue in good request, and the competition at auction to-day was active. Butchers’ green skins realised from 2s lOd to 3s Id for merinos, and up to 3a 6d for cross breds; dry skins, 17d to 20d each. Hides and Tallow ; No business to report. We shall offer a quantity next Wednesday. Nfav Zealand Hemp is unchanged, the demand being very slight. IfßAiN.— Wheat is, if anything, firmer, prime samples being wanted at up to ss; ordinary, 4s 9d to 4s lOd. Barley, none offering. In oats the tendency is still upward, although during the past few days the demand has been scarcely so brisk; we quote 3s 9d to 4s as the value today of good feed to prime milling.
