WASTE LAND BOARD.
The usual weekly meeting of the Board was held to-day at noon. Present—Messrs Tolmie, Thomson, Butterworth, Clark, and Strode.
Mr Fraser appeared regarding notice given to take up pre-emptive right in Provincial Government reserves.
The Board resolved that this, and all notices of a similar nature, should be considered to bo held in abeyance until the matter bad been finally settled by the General and Provincial Governments.
Mr Allan applied for and obtained a ten years’ lease of bush reserves at East Taieri, at a rental of Is per acre. Warden Borton’s valuation of improvements made upon sections 10 and 32, block 2 Ettrick, being L 370 and L 230 respectively, was approved of. A report from Mr Warden Simpson, relative to the application of Mr J. J. Jay to purchase sections 70 and 79» Leav ing Hock I -istrict, was read, and the further consideration of the application postponed. A minute of the Executive Council on the resolution of the Board, relative to land ap plied for by the Hon. Robert Campbell, was considered. The decision arrived at by the Board was, that the Government be requested to supply further informatiou upon the question of the extended application. . Mr W. G. Harris applied for liberty to take up pre-emptive right in run 354, and requested to know what compensation would be allowed for giving up Ihe pastoral lease of the ground he would purchase. The applicant was referred to the Waste Lands Act for the information sought. On the application of residents in the Shotover the appointment of John Edger as district ranger, without salary, was approved of. An application by the Rev. Mr Henlctt for one acre of ground at Coal Creek, Teviot, upon which a Wesleyan Church had been erected, was granted, subject to the runholders’ consent being obtained. The Australian Land Company applied to have section 37 block 1, Pomahaka district, put up for sale by auction, as its bush had all been removed. The application was referred for advice to the district ranger. On the recommendation of Ranger limes, it was agreed that no reduction should he made fur bush licensee taken up after the Ist July. Warden Beetb'am, Wakatipu, wrote relative to am application made to him for two water-races to which objections had been lodged. The Board resolved that Mr Beetham, as District Land Officer, should recommend two suitable persons to act as a Board of-Jnquiry, as provided for by the 51st section of the Goldfields Act.
A similar application from Warden Robinson, Mount Ida, was disposed of in the same way. An opinion from the Provincial Solicitor was read regarding a question raised by Sir F. D. Bell as to the power of the Board to sell 11,500 acres of land in Shag Valley; said land being referred to by a deed or covenant entered into between his Honor the Superintendent and Sir Francis, The point was held over for the opinion of the Attorney-General. The following applications for unsurveyed land Were approved of s—Daniel Clark for section ; 78, block 3, Waipahie ; W. G. Roberts for section 70, block 3, same district.
