PORT CHALMERS REGATTA.

Commodore—Capt. W. Thompson; Judges Captains Peacock and Whitson, and Mr W, K. Murray; Umpire—Oapt. M'Callum ; Clerk of the Course—-Capt. Camming; Sailing Committee —Captains M'Callum, and Messrs Goldie, Lines, and M'Kinnon. This regatta came off yesterday, and was a decided success. The first train from town brought down the town boats with them various crews, and immediately after their arrival all the ships hauled their colors up. The Euterpe is entitled to the preference as regards decoration. Thinking that she was to be the flagship, her officer, and crow took a great deal of pains and macie the vessel look really pretty. The committee thought it expedient to use the p.s. Patterson, which Capt. Kennedy had kindly placed at their disposal. The objection to the Euterpe was that she could not very well be shifted from where she lay on account of the Naomi being shifted in during the day. The flagship was well patronised, principally by visitors from town, and the Port was literally crammed with them ; indeed never before were there so many people in it. The first race, which was for seine fishing boats, started at eleven a.m. At the start Innes’s Elirt made rather a bungle, letting Kerr’s Rose take the lead by some distance, but when off Deborah Bay, with the race all in her own hands, she capsized whilst in stays, having been caught by a sudden squall from the north-west. The boat went down bodily. The crew of the Mary Van Every are entitled to the highest praise for their promptness in rescuing the Rose’s crew. After this accident the Coquette took the lead, but in the run borne Innes’s Flirt was too much for her, and came in twenty yards the winner. Race for Seine Fishing boats.— Boats not over 20ft over-all. First prize, L 6; second, L2 10s. Innes’s Flirt - 1

Gabim’s Coquette 2 The Ships’ Gig Race was the next event, and it brought three to the starting point. Macandrew’s gig Gessnell was the favorite. She took the lead at the start, and was never caught. Pair Oar’d Race— open to all First prize, L 5; second, L2. Macandrew’s Gessnell • • - * * 1 Morray’s Young Davie ... - 2 Innes’s Lutterworth The Scullers’ Race, which was next on the programe, created excitement, Macklay was laughed at on starting, the boats not being comparable, but ho pulled a splendid stroke throughout, and won by a length. Scullers’ Race— open to all. First prize, L 5 ; second prize, . Macklay’s Star of Peace - - * * 1 Harris’s Snowdrop 2 Muir’s Flora 3 The All-Comers’ Sailing Match was unfortunately a slow one, as there was little or no wind. Davis’s Victoria was the favorite, and came in a long way ahead of the rest. All-Comers’ Sailing Race— (yachts excluded.) First prize, L 6; second prize, L 3. Victoria 1 Will-o’-the-Wisp - 2

Wee Davie ' 3 The Pair-oar’d Race was represented by three boats. At the sound of the gun, Macklay’s Star of Peace, pulled by the Messrs Watson, took the lead, and went away with a splendid stroke, which they kept up throughout, their pulling being greatly admired. Jackson’s Kate gave up the race shortly after the start, and Inues’s Otago was a bad second. Pair Oar’d Waterman’s Skiff Race—(No cox.) First prize, L 5; second prize, £2. Macklay’s Star of Peace * 1

Innes’s OtagQ - - - * * * ” Shortly after the start of the last race, the gun ias fired to bring the four-oar’d boats to their places, 'phis proved tq bo one qf the best races of the day. At the start. Muiris Victoria took the lead with a splendid stroke, but it was easy to be seen that the pace could not be kept up. In the first round, Harris’s Amateur passed the Victoria, kept up a fine steady stroke, and came in a winner by twenty lengths. Four-oar’d Race (with cox.)— Boats not to exceed 25ft. First prize, L 7; second prize, L 3. Harris’s Amateur 1 Muir’s Victoria 2

Wenlock’s Telegraph 3 The next race, for •whaleboats, was, of course, looked upon as the race of the day, and brought out four boats. The course was about nine miles, and some splendid pulling was exhibited. Robertson,’s Shark took the lead, and was never plight, although tho Minnie’s crew did their best, and pulled well. Bradshaw’s Gipsy Queen - 3 The Scullers’ Race, in watermen’s skiffs, was tho next race, and before starting was thought a gift.to Turnbull, who had a far superior boat to the others. He got a fine start, and was never caught, although Macklay tried hard to do so.

Macklay’s Star of Peace • - - - 2 Watson’s Volunteer • ? * 2 The Regatta was brought to a close by the Pair Oar’d Race, which was marked second on tho programme, but owing to some dispute about coxswains, had to be postponed. It proved to be as good a race as any that had been rowed. Three boats started; the Amateur was the favorite, and went away with the lead, coming in an easy winner. The last race was finished at five o’clock, and with it was brought to a close one of the most successful regattas ever held in Port Chalmers. Too much praise cannot be given to the committee for their exertions, and to the crew of the Patterson for their assistance on the flagship. The prizes were all paid during the evening, at Dench’s hotel A protest was entered against the winner of the whaleboat race, Shark, on the ground that she was rowed with her flooring-boards out. The committee entertained the protest, and awarded the first prize to the Minnie, and the second to the Gypsy Quern,
