Oamaru.— The St. John’s Branch, being No. 76 of the Hibernian Australian Catholic Benefit Society, was opened in the Volunteer Hall on Tuesday evening last, by Mr M. C. Joice, the delegate from the Chief Branch, Victoria. Forty-three members were initiated, and the following office bearers appointed : Vice President, Mr Jeremiah Markham ; secretary, Mr J. Joyce; treasurer, Mr James Markham ; guardian, Mr James Hannan; and warden, Mr J. Cahill.—A number of gentlemen met Mr William Dcrrett, late of Springfield Farm, and for twelve years a much respected resident of the town and district, yesterday, with a view to giving him a token of esteem on the occasion of his removing to Wanganui. Mr Mowat, in the name of the gentlemen present, and a number of other subscribers to the testimonial, handed to Mr Derrctt a handsome gold lever hunting watch richly chased, with heavy chain and seal; and, in so doing, said that he was very happy to discharge so pleasing a duty. During the term of his long residence here Mr Denett had deservedly earned the respect and esteem of all. He had set an example of steady industry, and had taken »n active part in many matters for the public good, particularly in the Acclimatisation and Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Associations. His removal was a loss to the district, but would, he trusted, prove a benefit to himself. He was sure that all present joined in wishing all happiness and prosperity to Mr Derrett, Mrs Derrctt, and family. The watch, which was here handed to Mr Derrett, bore the following inscription : —“ Presented to Mr William Derrett on his leaving Oamaru—a public expression of good will, and for services rendered in connection with the Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Acclimatisation Society. —North Otago Times.
