WASTE LAND BOARD.
The usual meeting of the Waste Land Board was held in the Waste Lands Office, yesterday. Present, the Chief Commissioner, and Messrs Strode, Butterworth, and Clarke.
A letter was read from Mr Hallenstein, relative to the burning of the quarters of the District Surveyor, Queenstown, which had just been purchased from the Government. It was submitted that the loss should be made good by the Government. The matter was referred to the Government.
An application was made by Messrs Surman and Malaghan for a license to occupy ten acres of the bush at Horn Creek, and asking permission to construct a tramway from it to Lake Wakatip. '1 be application was referred to the District Land i ffieer ; a survey to be submitted before the Board gave a decision. Mr Crenelle, hou. sec., applied for a site for a Church of England, adjoining that occupied by the Komau Catholic Chiiich at Xaseby. The Board decided as in the preceding application. William and Daniel Macready applied for a coal lease of five acres, adjoining their present one at Kyeburn. Kef erred to the District Surveyor to report that the five acres have been worked out before auy more was granted. Mr Joseph Rogers, occupier of Run 214, asked if he would be allowed to take up his pre-emptive right in two blocks of 320 acres each, and if thero-was any limit to the shape. The Board referred him to section 103b. Waste Lands Act, 1872. Messrs Connell aud Hoodie applied, on behalf of Mr Robert Robson, for license to occupy Totara Island, Clutha River, for the purpose of planting the same with forest trees, under clause 169, Otago Waste Lands Act, 1872. The application was referred to the Ranger for him to report. Messrs Smith and Anderson, for Mr T. J. Jay, requested a decision on his application to purchase sections 70 to 79, block 2, Leaning Rock District, held under agricultural lease. Referred to the District Laud Officer to state if there be any objection to the purchase. A letter from the District Land Officer. Naseby, was received, relative to the difficulty of reconciling sections 65 and 50 of the Waste Lands Act, 1872, and advertising applications for water-races. The applications were to be advertised in the usual course. A letter was read from Mr Thomas Pollock, requesting the Board to stop proceedings against him for the recovery of the leases of the bush reserves, Metric creek, Wairuna and Popotunoa. The Ranger was ordered to report as early as possible. A report from Warden Stratford was read, concerning the dispute between Messrs M'Kibbon and OVallaghan, as to their application for a coal lease at Cardrona. It was decided that the protection granted to O’Oallaghan should be withdrawn, and a license granted to him on payment of the license fee by return of post. The District Land Officer at Queenstown asked the Board in what way, under subsection 2 of section 6a, should objections be publicly notified, and if they were to be advertised, who would have to boar the expense ? The Board were of opinion that the nature of the objections may be posted at the Court house, and that the advertisements should bo paid by the applicants. Mr Malloch appeared to apply for twelve months’ extension to his holding the township reserve, Upper Taieri. The application was declined.
Oapt. Fraser applied regarding his preemptive right in Run 430, the same being a reserve. The question of the right of the Board to sell laud for pre-emptive rights within reserves proclaimed by the Provincial Council was referred tq the Provincial Solicitor. The Board then adjourned.
