Yesterday an engine and eight trucks passed ten miles along the Southern Railway Extension to Rakait, and across the Bakaia bridge. The line will be opened for traffic in a few days. Thirty salmon ova have been hatched out. A fire on the Papanui road, three-quarters of a mile from the centre of the City, occurred at twenty minutes past six this evening. It originated in a stable; there was a brick building oh one aid#, and d riglj t-of-way on the other side, thus the flames were easily stopped. The damage consists of Mr Simpson's grocer's shop slightly damaged; the stable, one horse, quantity of hay and Eotatoes destroyed; Mr Viney’s confectioner’s rick shop, shingle roof, almost gutted. In boils cases the stock-in-trade was all re* ntaved by the fire police. The total damage will not exceed LSQQ, The Liverpool, Lon* don, aud Globe office loses a* swill afgoqq| on Viney’s stock, None of the other offices are affected.
The Wild Duck brought 102 passengers; all well.
