SERVANTS.

To the Editor.

Sir, —Tn replying to the letter signed “ One who never had a bad servant,” allow me to congratulate her, happy woman, upon being so fortunate. Perhaps she is one of the “good mistresses who will always get good servants,” and not “incapable ©f managing a servant properly;” or possibly she may have had only one, and, it may be, a good one; for she must bear in mind that I have not said that all servants are not what they ought to be. Society would certainly be in a bid state then. I will not deny that “there is a class of women in this town, who call themselves ladies and mistresses,” and who are wot thy of all the billing--gate bestowed on them by “One who never had a bad servant,” and may treat their servants just in the manner she describes. There are such in every community, but if she would have us think that she is not one of that class, she should be a little more ladylike and moderate in her expressions, Bhe says she knows mistresses “ who treat their servants with respect,” “make them work proper hours” “allow them suitable time for themselves,” &c. Granted she does; and I also know that the more kind and considerate mistresses are to some servants, the more saucy and troublesome they become. This, lam aware, is the experience of several “good mistresses,” notwithstanding the assertion that “good mistresses will always get good servants.” lam just about thinking that this “proud boaster ” has not had any experience at all with servants, and that she is not sincere. Be that as it may, I still say that a good many of the servants offering themselves now-a-days are worse than useless, and that we are much in want of good and useful servants, and I again assert that most of the ladies of Dunedin will agree with me. I have again to congratulate “one who never had a bad servant,” and would strongly advise the lady, if she has a good servant, to endeavor to keep her. I hope, Mr Editor, I have not trespassed too much on your space, and I promise not to trouble you again on this subject.—l am, &c,, Mrs Tidy. Dunedin, May 17.
