FATAL GUN ACCIDENT AT AUCKLAND.

An accident occurred last night ( April 28) in the Hank of New Zealand. It appear* tliat Mr W. Greene, of Mount Fdeu, one of the bank officials, down last evening to the office to do some work after hours ; and that he was left in the bank by the messenger, Mr Falconer, who went out for a few minutes so Mr Hami ton’s shop for medicine. On his return he heard a low moaning, and his name called in a feeble tone of voice. On going to the spot, he found Mr Greene lying on the floor, as he heli ved in a fainting fit, to which Mr Greene was subject; but examining him more closely, he saw blood upon his clothes. Falconer then sent for Mr Edson, a relative of Greene’s, and he at once despatched a cab for I r Kenderdine, who arrived about nine o’clock. Ho found a gunshot wound in G;pepe’s cheat, and he was in a state almost of collapse. A more minute examination was afterwards made, and a ballet wound was found extending from rear the left nipple upwards for th ee inches The position of the bullet could no* be ascertained, but it is supposed to have passed backwa da. Mr Greono wa< quite sensible, and able to answer questions. Ue said the affair was accidental; that he took down the revolver to examine it, and was replacing it in the case when it exploded Ho did not think it was loaded with ball; but as the remaining four tr ambers are loaded with ball, and ibree of them arc capped, it is co tain that he is mistaken. We should explain that loaded revolvers are provid- d by the bank for the use of the officers in case of attack. The ball was extracted next day. It was found imbedded m the blade bone of the unfortunate gentleman, and in its passage

the bullet had split. A piece of the bone was found in the notch wbm it was ex tracted, and the lungs were penetrated. Tin pistol with which the accident occurred a hair-trigger pis'ol, and Mr Greene war replacing it in the box when it exploded. It fitted rather tightly in th- case, and oi "or; inn it into its position, the trigger must have touched something, and thus led to the melancholy accident. New Zealand Herald.
