Drunkenness.— David Wilson alias Watson alias Lawson alia* Wilkie, an old offender, was fined 2Cb, with the option of forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Obtaining Goods under False Pre--tences. —Robert Rankin was charged with unlawfully imposing, by certain verbal false representations, on Messrs Isaacs and Marks, with a view to obtain goods by the said representations.—Woolf Isaacs knew the accused, who went to his shop in March last and asked for some clothing, saying he had to got from Mr Pockson, Messrs Smith and Anderson’s manager, L9O, and from these representations witness gave him clothes of the value of L 5. On making inquiries cohcerning the money, he found accused’s statement to be entirely without foundation. By the Bench s No entry of the date was made, but it was about the 15tb March.

John Gray, tipber merchant, had known accused, who was a mason, for a number of years, and had previously never known anything against hi* character.—Mr Isaacs said as the last wtness bad given the accused A good character he did not wish to press the charge; hut the Bench thought it their duty to d-al with the case so as to protect the public, for if they were to dismiss the charge accused might go into any shop and impose similarly. The Act stated that any one convicted of the offence was called a rogue and vagabond, and w.-.a further liable 1o twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labor. In consequence of the representations made by the prosecutor, ho would he dealt with more leniently than under ord'nary circumstances. Ho was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, with hja r d labor. Bye-law Cases. —Wm. Mirams, allowing the chimney of hn house to bo on lire, was lined 2s 6d and costs ; Wra. Kodgers, furiously driving, 20s and costs. Charges against Joseph Bpcdding and Jonathan Hodgson of obstructing the footpath in Princes street south, by placing goods thereon, were dismissed on payment of costs ; and Edward Devine and Jas. Scott, for driving their coaches and horses round the street corners at other than a walking pace, were let off with a caution.
