At a special meeting of the Standard Property Investment Society last night, the directors’ report, recommending a reduction of the present rate of interest to 74 per cent., was unanimously agreed to. We have heard that the following candidates, who were among the sixteen who went up for the matriculation examination, satisfied the examiners -.—Allan, 14. H. ; Barton, E. ; Blackie, J. ; Hunter, A. P. ; Hazlcy, G, A. : Low, A, J. ; Park, A. J. ; Solomon, S. ; Stuart, D. M. ; Webb, C. C. ; White, D. ; Will, J. A. This afternoon the Provincial Secretary (Mr Tolmie) explained the circumstances under which the present Executive accepted office. He defended the Waste Land Board from Mr Reid’s aspersions, and pointed out the anomalous position in which the Traquair and Stewart Hundreds were left by the late Executive. Dr. Webster moved a further amendment of confidence in the Ministry, but recommending their resignation.

The following are the handicaps for the Grand Open Handicap to be held on Saturday next : —IOO yards: Fox, scratch ; Drake, scratch ; Pollock, 5 yds.; Westland, 5 yds. ; Butler, 6 yds, ; Mooney, 7 yds. ; E. The Board, by a majority of onelesars Tolmie and Thomson supporting the

sale, and Messrs Strode, Butterworth, an' 3 Clark opposing it—declined to grant the ap plication, Mr Begg, agent for Mr Camphell, gave no‘ice of appeal to the Supreim Court. Our report will appear to-morrow. On the Order Paper of the Canterbury Provincial Council, for Thursday next, there appears the following notice of motion given by the Provincial Secretary That this Council, seeing that the steps taken by th General Government in respect of iramigra tiou to this Province have proved hitherto inadequate to meet its requirements, and feeling convinced that any failure in that direction seriously impedes the set Cement of the waste lands of the Province, the develop ment of industries, the extension of public works, and the general prosperity of all classes of the community, are of opinion that a system of immigration should be reestablished under the control and management of the Provincial Government, and that immediate steps be taken for effecting tins object; that his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to place on the estimates a sum not exceeding L‘o,ooo, for the purpose of carrying the above resolution into effect.”

A meeting of the Society for invest ; gating Spiritualism will be held in the lower hall of the Athemeura to-morrow evening at 7.30, when Mr Nuttall will deliver a lecture on the “Signs of the Times, Theological, Social, and Political.”
