Nelson, April 29,
The turning of the first sod of the railway is postponed until the 6th May, in order to permit Mr Yogel to be present at the ceremony. The nomination for the Suburbs will take place on May 9th, and the poll on the 14th, The Provincial Council opens to-morrow.
Queenstown, April 28.
Mr Hallensteiu visited the district throughout, and was received generally well. Votes of confidenge resulted. He bad tp explain matters as to his past votes, He stated be believed the inquiry instituted into the mystery of the Vogel Government by Mr Stafford bad led to confidence, as was instanced by Mr Stafford’s recent purchases. The Ministry was indefinitely formed. He could promise it no support until its surroundings were fixed. He believed Mr Vogel had the good of the Colony at larg *at heart, and his zeal was the result. Mr Vogel resembled Warren Hastings in his career, being ready to sacrifice districts and men for the general good. These answers were the result of questions. At Arrowtown a vote against Mr Hallenstein was carried. He said that selfish and local views were at work there, otherwise the vote would have been different.
Wellington, April 28,
Fight tenders were received for the Brunner coal line. No decision will bo come to till Mr Richardson returns.
Napier, April 28. The Natives have given Mr Mitchell 10,000 acres of laud surrounding the township of Bowen to extinguish his lien for surveys. The remainder of the block, consisting of 200,000 acres, is now open for sale or to let.
Auckland, April 28,
Reports from country districts state that great iujuries have resulted from the recent heavy rains. In some cases fences, land, and orchards have been swept away, and several houses destroyed. ' At the Bay of Islands a dwolling-houso was Carried off the blocks. The inmates climbed on the reof, and some where in their night clothes when rescued. In the north of Auckland especially, the floods were greater than ever previously known. The Southern Cross this morning contains a full telegraphic report of a meeting of settlers held at Cambridge, re the murder of Sullivan, iu the Waikato district; Captain Geslie in the chair. The following resolutions were carried unanimously : ‘ ‘ That this meeting feels the utmost horror and detestation of the brutal murder of Timothy Sullivan, and pledges itself to use every lawful means in its power to bring the murderers to justice.” 2. “That this meeting is of opinion that as .he country in the vicinity of Pukekura is totally unprotected, the Government ought to erect a block-house at Pukekura without loss of time.” 3. “That this meeting stands adjourned for one. week, to allow time for
the Defence Minister to commence > pursuit of the murderers.” The nine murderous natives reported as prowling in the neighbourhood of Mr Buckland’s station are behoved to be all Aritetahas. There are some twenty fighting men responsible for the late murder. The Native meeting which was to have taken place to-day at Tokangamutu will, it is believed, fall through in consequence of the murder. The meeting was called by Tawhaio’s expressed wish, for the purpose of making peace with the Europeans and to put a final stop to all murders. It is supposed that Manuhiri is not agreeable to the proposals.
