CITY POLICE COURT.

Drunkenness, —Timothy Green was lined VS, with the usual alternative; and an additional fin,e of 11s, for damage done to Goyernment property while in the cell, was imposed ; in default, twenty-four hours’ impyisonmont, with hard labor. Illegally on the Premised— Abraham Fogcl was charged with being illegally on the premises of Jacob Fogcl, Great King street, at noon on the 25th inst. Jacob Fogel, father pf the defendant, said he had been annoyed by his sou during last three years. lie had given Ipm a siq.rt in business frequently; but still the son came back wanting more money, lie had also struck Witness on more than one occasion. The son pleaded that, if let off this time, he would never molest his father again, nor even look him in the face. He stated, in answer to the Bench, that he was twentythree years of age, and perfectly healthy. He was discharged with a caution, but warned if again brought up, he would be sentenced to the full penalty, m/.., one month's imprisonment with hard labor. Ursuknu i an cm auk. — Ambrose Chiaroni appeared in answer to a complaint laijl by Vincent Almao, charging him with making use of insulting language towards'him on the 10th inst. Mr MTveay appeared for the plaintiff; Mr Wilson for the defendant. Mr M’Keay, in stating the case, said both parties were Italians and respectable tradesmen. A case had been heard in the Resident Magistrate’s Court lately, and on the following evening defendant met the complainant, stopped him, and said in Italian to him “ Maladettoladro,” meaning in English “You d d thief,” and then added “perjuraulo,” “You have perjured yourself.” He also used other insulting language, and he (Mr ,Vs‘Kcay) hoped that the Bench, by their decision, would show the defendant that it w.as necessary that the peace should be maintained. The comp'ainant said on the evening of the day in question he was walking along Primes •'•trect with his wife, when the defendant deul-,...itely stopped tnem, and said to him in Italian, “ You d d thief, you perjured yourself,” Witness then called to a few persona passing to hear what defendant said ; but they replied they could not understand him, and walked away. Defendant also said to his (witness’s) wife, “ Mrs, your husband bad man; he perjure himself.” Lie then walked away, shaking his stick, and replying they would meet again. By Mr Wilson ; The only language witness used was “ You are ungeutleraanly.” He believed defendant had referred to the case heard in the other Court a few days ago. Had he not been with his wife he would

have provoked a breach of the peace. —Jan* Almao, complainant’s wife, corroborated his evidence.—Mr Wilson said Chiaroni had lived here a number of years, and had nev'T before been charged with provoking a breach of the peace in any way. As soon as this young firebrand came here he occasioned a disturbance. Almao showed he had a very excitable temper. —The Bench thought the case was proved, and had very little doubt, that a portion of the language —at all events that in English—had been used. A number of people, unfortunately, allowed personal animosity to influence their minds to a great extent, and the flench intended as mneh as possible to put a stop to it. Defendant woul 1 l)e fined 40s, professional costs and tests of Court added.

Maintenance.— James Reid was charged on warrant, issued by the Christchurch Bench, with neglecting to con'ribute towards the support of bis illegitimate child. He was remanded to Christchurch.
