IMMIGRATION.
To the Editor.
Sir, - As I have always a great dread of making my letters too long, I did not touch upon, in my last, a very important point connected with immigration. Immigration is so very important that really we should do all in our power to make it a succcs?, because upon it chiefly depends the future prosperity of the Colony. Thousands are leaving the old country every month for America. It should be our aim to induce them to come here, where I confidently believe they would succeed as well, and have the additional gratification of remaining subjects of our beloved Queen. the long voyage is the greatest bar against our otherwise favorable inducements. Mr Macandrew, in his speech at Port Chalmers the other day, expressed a hope that a line of steamers would soon ply direct from the Clyde. If this were the case, thousands would come here that are tempted at present by the short voyage to Amei'ica. it would be wise on the part of our Government to give, say L2 per head, more for bringing out immigrants by steamers that could do the voyage ifl about 60 days, because we would have the immigrants working here a month sooner, itul, consequently enriching the Colony, beddes the much greater chance we would have of attracting the swarms of enterprising ■uen who arc leaving the old country, were such a line of steamers established. 1 sincerely hope that the Government will make strong efforts to induce a powerful company to place a first class fleet of steamers ou the
line. Our merchants wouhl be compelled In self-defence to give thd steamers freight, because iu this go-ahead age the quickest means of commuircition must be taken advantage of. —I am, &c , Alpha. April 24.
