EDUCATION BOARD.
There was a meeting! of the Education Board yesterday, at which his Gwor the Superintendent all the members except tyr Bathgate were present. We only room for a resumd of the proceedings :
The Balclutha School Committee’s application for the sanction qf the Board to the qf Orchis ten was agreed The enlargement of the school buildings was postponed, pending tho action of the Provincial Council,
The applications of John B. Park and A Solomon lor permission to enable their sons (who are Provincial Scholars at the High School) to attend the University, was agreed to. A memorial from the residents of Clinton, requesting that a new school be established, was postponed for further consideration. A memo, was read from the Secretary of the Hampden School Committee, requesting the confirmation of Miss Fraraa Wcif’a appointment as sewing mistress and guesting that, as the \\'as Jo b,e enlarged, at an estimated qmoqut o.f a Bill should be introduced mjo, the Provincial Council, empowering the School Committee to raise the necessary fund#. Mia# Weir’s appointment wap confirmed ; the question of building was postponed, and it was resolved that the Government be recommended to introduce a Bill to give effect to that purpose. On the application of Mr J. W. Thomson, on behalf of Mr Wright, to lease or purchase a portion of the school glebe at Waiwera, it was resolved that the Government be requested to introduce an Ordinance to effect the proposed exchange. The consideration of a memorial for the establishment of a new school at Kingston was postponed. J. Chteaeman applied for a continuance of rent allowance to the teacher at Ophir .School. Resolved tuat the allowance be continued for another year. James Brown forwarded aJmemiwVd for th« establishment of a so ; h,qo| CUftftn. Tho consideration qf jt was postponed. A wag read frrtin, the Secretary of theMosgiel School Committee, requestingthat truir teacher might be removed. The Inspector was ordered to report. The Dunedin School Committee reported re Miss Gordon’s memorial; and it was resolved that the matter rested with the Local Committee.
The Dunedin School Committee’s projiosL tion in portioning the school fees aj Noyth Dunedin School—“ That t.l\P arrangement at present in operation the Middle School, viz., the giving c,f one-fourth surplus fees to head-master, oxic-fourth to the second master, one-iourth to tho schoolmistress, one-eighth to the third master, and oneeighth to tho asaiatant-mittress, be adopted at the North School ’’—was agreed to. Mr Hardy applied to bo allowed to remove a cottage from off the South Dunedin Education Reserve. The Board resolved to appoint a suitable person to act as arbitrator.
Mons. J. Besaac applied for the appointment of French teacher to tho High School, in the place of Mr J. Pope resigned, The Board declined in the to make any appointment. The WaiKatf School Committee’s application for 1 127 ss, to complete school premises, was deferred, pending the action of the Provincial Council.
The Invercargill Grammar School applied by letter for the sanction of the appointment of a second assistant master, at a salary of L2OO per annum. It was agreed to grant LSO a-year. The Invercargill Grammar School also applied for the sanction of the temporary appointment of Donald M'Killop as pqpil-tcaqhei', 'which was agreed to. A complaint read from Bricn’s, Fqint School Committee requesting that Mr Rq?s bo removed. The Inspector was ordered to report. The consideration of a memorial from the inhabitants of the C*ew School at Gatlin’s River, was postponed, pending the action of tho Provincial Council.
Mr fiislop’s recommendation, that the site for the school at North Shag Valley be altered, was agreed to. The other suggestion that the Outram district be formed into a separate Educational District waagreed to.
