Drunkenness. —James Guy and Arthur Burdett Averc each fined 55., Avith the alternative of 24 hours’ imprisonment; Janet Rarrier, 10s or 48 hours; Ann Sherry, against whom there were twenty nine previous convictions, 40s or 48 hours; John Wilks, Avho had been in the lock-up since Saturday, Avas discharged with a caution. Obscene Language.— Henry Pierce, alias Meerschaum, was charged Avith making use of obscene language within the hearing of persons passing in Walker street.—Constable Rooney said he arrested the accused, who was in a house in which there was a number of prostitutes, and that he had a deal of trouble in bringing him to the station. Accused said the constable had arrested him, because when a case of vagrancy was heard against him about a fortnight ago, Mr Ward, who was on the bench, ordered constable Rooney to leave the witness box, on account of the manner in which he gave his evidence.—Accused then said the Avounds on his face Avere inflicted by the constable. — Sub-Inspector Mallard said he wished to allow the accused every chance of substantiating his case, but he could not allow such remarks as had just been made to pass unnoticed. On his (the Sub-Inspector) visiting the cell in which accused was, he (accused) said the constable had caused the Avounds Avith his baton, but batons Avere not used in the day-time. On further enquiry it appeared that accused had pulled the constable’s beard, and a struggle ensued, during which the accused fell, and the marks on his face were the result of that fall. The constable (added the Sub-Inspector) was to be praised for sticking to his prisoner in the way he did.—Accused persisted in saying that it Avas a piece of spite and revenge on the part of the police. He was lined L 5, Avith the option of a month’s imprisonment.
Petty Largknv.— John Berkley, on repiand, was charged with having, on the 21st inst., stolen a coat of the value of L2 from one Henry Evans at the Prince of Wales Hotel. He was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment.
