Friendly Societies in Scotland are in a flourishing state. According to the registrar’s report, forty-seven friendly societies had an income during 1871 of L 21,042, and they expended but L 15,913, or more than L 5,000 less than their receipts. The registrar is not aware of a single society in Scotland holding its meetings in a public-house or tavern. The majority hold their meeting* in their own hall, the parish school-house, or some similar place.
