MR REID IN REPLY.

To the Editor.

Sir, —For th« information of those who listened to n r Dunn’s lecture last evening, but who did not hear my sermon of the preceding Sunday, allow me, through your columns, distinctly and emphatically to deny having said that “ Spiritualism was of the devil,” and that “I was afraid Spiritualism would destroy the Bible.” Dr Dunn heard my sermon, and is therefore in a position to know that no such sentiments as the above were uttered by me. The point at issue between Mr Peebles and the sects, as set forth in ray sermon, is this—that, whereas Mr Peebles professes admiration of the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, he repudiates, as fossilised creeds of the Fathers, certain doctrines which were most clearly and solemnly taught by Jesus Christ, including the doctrines of the personality of the devil and the eternal punishment of the wicked. The Sects hold that Jesus Christ taught these doctrines. Dr Dunn declares that these doetriues had their origin in the brain of some half-crazed theologian. The question as to authorship can easily be settled by an appeal to the Bible. To all the questions proposed by Dr Dunn, in his review of my sermon, lam prepared to reply. Will Air Peebles answer my one query, viz., Did not Jesus of Nazareth teach the personality of the devil, aud the eternal punishment of the wicked ? Or will Dr Dunn answer for him ?—Y ours, «fec , Alexander Reid. Dunedin, March 17.
