THE INTERPROVINCIAL REGATTA.

(From the “Press” Telegrams.)

On Tuesday the weather was very propitious. Five steamers accompanied the race, and there were tremendous crowds both on shore and on the bay. The gig race started at twelve with commendable punctuality, The start was by ho means good, the outside boats being quite two lengths to the good. Six boats started, the Fernlcaf being scratched. Dolly Varden was the quickest to show to the front, Stella next, Sabrina third, pulling steadily ; Waterlily, which had the worst position, steadily improved, leaving the Cam last to get away, At the bead ip the course, the Stella and

Dolly Varden were leading, but steered outside the flag, bad to pull back, and were out of the race. The Waterlily now spurted up, taking a good second place. The Sabrina objected, put it on, and drew away. Lyttelton responded, and again made up their lost ground, racing neck and neck with Sabrina ; Wellington, third ; Cara, fourth, at a long interval, Half-way the Sabrina and Waterlily fouled, losing their lead, the Wellington getting on equal terras with them. The -Sabrina was the first to got away, and recovered her lead, laying it on, a fine spurt, with a long sweeping stroke. The Waterlily and Wellington now spurted alternately for second place, Sabrina keeping her lead of two lengths at the same steady stroke, pulling thirty-seven, Waterlily thirty-eight, Wellington forty, the rest being out of the race. Lytte’ton now began to pull wild, being evidently pumped, letting the Wellington take and retain the second place; the Sabrina still, with great good judgment, maintaining her stroke at a steady pace of thirty-seven, and keeping the lead. Lyttelton now pulled in shore, evidently in extremis. Through rather wide steering the Sabrina got too close in shore, losing her tine lead, and the Wellington closing up, the Sabrina now made a magnificent spurt to recover her position, which she did with apparent ease, again settling to thirtyseven, which was maintained to the finish, coming in winner by six lengths ahead of the Wellington; Kaiapoi, 200 yards astern; time, 22min. 14.575ec. Had the Stella without a cox not made the mistake of getting outside the flag wPh the lead she then had, she would have made it very hot for the Sabrina. The Sabrina’s steering gear worked well, being more effective than that in the Wellington boats. Dawson steered splendidly. Sabrina (Christchurch Amalgamated Crew) ... ... ... ... ... 1 Wellington (Wellington Lowing Club) ... 2 H. F, Logan’s Stella (Wellington) ... 3 Cam (Cure Boating Club) ... ... ... 4 Waterlily (Lyttelton Amalgamated) ... 0 Dolly Yarden (Wellington Club) ... 0 The inrigged gig race was won by Wellington by six or seven lengths ; the pairoared by Kaiapoi easily (time, 15 21), and the scullers’ race by Dawson, of Christchurch, by about four lengths. His opponents were Wood of Wellington and Yerdon of the Heathcote Club.
