The conditions on which Mr Fox took office arc that the Governor, on Mr Vogel’s return, asks him to become Premier, which, if he accepts, Mr Fox at orce retires. Should Mr Vogel decline, Mr Fox will, if desired, retain office on condition that Parliament be summoned as soon as possible, which cannot be until May, as it now stands prorogued to April 15, and the necessary accommodation could not be provided before May. As the Provincial Councils nearly all meet in April, an earlier session would be inconvenient. Private advices say Mr Webb will continue his line, notwithstanding the loss of the American subsidy. Wanganui, March 5. The South British Insurance shareholders here arc signing a protest against the issuing of fresh shares.
Auckland, March 5. The Governor arrived at the Manakau last night, and landed this morning. He attends the Native meeting at Ngaruawhia on the 12 hj. The Artists 1 Association Kxhihiiion. op necl to-day. The exhibits arc good, and the attendance was large. A house was burned at Onehunga, and it is supposed to have been the act of an incendiary.
