Wellington, February 27. The Rangatira brought 190 tons of coal from Grey month last night. Her engineers report most favorably on it for steam purposes. The political situation remains unchanged. Memos, are passing between the Governor and the Premier. It is said that Mr O’Rorke intents to resign. The portion of the Waitaki line let to Mr Rrogden is that between Oamara and Moeraki. Mr Brogdeu’s tendeis for the Brunner coal line and the line from Timaru to Young’s Creek, have been declined. The wo ks will be let by public tender. The Governor, in a memorandum, strongly urged Mr Waterhouse to withdraw his resignation ; hut the latter absolutely refuses to do so. The general idea is that Parliament must be summoned immediat-ly. In the meantime the Governor d.dines to postpone his departure.
Queenstown, February 28. Consequent upon the extraordinary success which has attended the river workings, applications are beginning to flow iu to the Government for special grants. These tend to lock up the ground. The New Channel Company have shut out much practicable ground for work. The special grants require to be very carefully considered, or injury to the mining interest will result. The Blind Stab Company continue to get enormous yields. r ube quartz returns for the district are unreliable, none of the accounts having been certified to. 'I he Ministerial crisis is being largely discussed here; aud the split in the Cabinet is generally regretted, Mr Hallenstein, the member for the I akes, publicly stated that he was sorry to hear of Mr Waterhouse’s resignation. There is a strong wish to see party disputes ended by the formation of a Coalition Ministry,
