YESTERDAY’S NEWS.

In an article dealing with the altered condition of Canterbury in 1872-3, as compared with the period when the Stafford Government was ejected from office in 1869, the Lyttelton Times rema-ks “If indeed we wanted a tolerably striking sum in addition to start off with, we could scarcely do better than point out the increased value of our wool. We might tot up the 40,000,0U01b5. which we usually reckon that we are exporting, the price of w'hich has risen from 8d to 14d per lb. as per present advices. 1! ere is an addition of L 1,000,000 to our annual income upon one staple alone.”

Mr A. Koch, of the Public Works department, Wellington, is preparing for the Government a magnificent typographical map of the Colony, which is to be sent to the Vienna Exhibition. It is compiled from official sources, and shows the roads and lines of telegraph in each island, and the proposed and existing railways in the Middle Islan 1. It also gives every kind of typographical feature as yet known, and obtained by actual and sketch survey. It is 7ft. long and oft. wide, and is on a scale of twelve miles to an inch. The whole is the work of Mr Koch, by whom it was projected, compiled, and drawn, and it has been his sole occupation since the beginning of December. A second map on the same scale, but showing the geology of the Colony, is also to be prepared by Mr Koch for the Vienna Exhibition.
