Drunkenness.-- John Dupree was fined ss, with the option of twenty-four hours’ imprison ment. Fighting. —Sr,mud hhirw'ood and James Russell were lined respectively 20s and 10s, with the usual alternative in each case.

Alleged Theft —John Maclonald, on remand, was charged with stealing a coat from tho Rainbow' Hotel, the property of M A. Fox. A. Solomon, pawnbroker, said accused pawned the coat produced with him the 21st instant, giving his name as O’Donnell, and saying he had only recently arrived from Melbourne, Accused also said the coat was bis. Ac fused said he was s< rry for what he had done, and the only way he could account for it was that he had been on the drink. He meant to redeem the coat, but was arrested ou the gaol steps as he was coming out on Sunday morning, lie did not think prosecutor would have had him arrested had he known where he (accused) was. As it was his first crime, he hoped the Bench would .be lenient with him. The Bench said that, according to tbe eighty-second section of tho Justice of the Peace Act, they could dismiss the accused when the value of the article was not over 20s, even though the felony had been committed. In the evidence of prosecutor, given yesterday, he had stated that he gave accused permission to wear a coat, but not the one stolen and afterwards pawned ; and some reliance might be placed 011 the statement of accused, that he meant to redeem it. Accused was discharged with a caution.

Assault. —Joshua Eccles, on remand, was charged with assaulting and beating his wife, Susan Eccles Complainant said defendant had attempted to cut her throat with a r zor, and had taken Inr hat and boots away from her during the night. Defendant denied the statement. He was bound over on his own recognisance of L2O, and two other sureties of LlO, to keep tho peace for three months.
