Several stud-sheep, per Cissy, from England, being infected with foot and nv>uth disease, the Superintendent of Canterbury has applied to the Government to take steps to prevent the introduction of the disease, and the Executive Council to-day ordered the Customs authorities at all ports to prevent the landing of any sheep or cattle from England, without the consent of the Provincial authorities.

The captain of the ship Christian M'Ansland has forwarded a report to the Government complaining of the low physique of the immigrants by that ship, and stating that, if any medical inspection took plaoe, it was of a very indifferent character. The Government intend introducing Education and Bankruptcy Bills this session. The former, in its main features, will be similar to Mr Fox’s Bill; but the Bill will be of an empowering character, enabling any Province that chooses to adopt it. The Government will also introduce a Bill to define more exactly, and to increase the powers of Provincial legislatures to pass measures heretofore deemed ultra vires.

The ' Governor has given one hundred guineas towards founding a scholarship in the New Zealand University. Mr Brogden’s tender for a portion of the Waitaki and Moeraki line, from Oamaru southwards, is expected to bo in to-morrow ; that for the Brunner line in a few daya, Messrs Vogel and Reynolds are expected to return by the Hero to Auckland. Auckland, February 17. ' The Clenhuntly has cleared for London, and takes 11,OOOczs gold. Three Cavalry Volunteer Representatives go from Auckland to-day.
