iffr Warden Simpson, under date Clyde, 12th February, furnishes the following statistics of the Dunstan Goldfield REGISTERED MINING COMPANIES.
Mining Leases, —Six have been granted, extending over 83 acres 3r 4p. at a rental of L 531 18? 4d, and 62 agricultural leases, comprising 3,680 a3 r 18p at a rental of L 1,426 10s Bd. The general statistics of the district arc given asunder:— Water Races, *c.— I The number of water races in the district is 70, constructed at a cost of L 60.000, and estimated now to be worth L3Q,(jop. Their aggregate length is S6O tiiileii supply 200 ’sluice Mads of water. There are 50 tail races which'cost LI I), 000, and are valued at present at LlO.OOl). The number of dqtns is f they pp'st LI,7fQ, npd are now worth L}, 5,00. Of ground sluiqes there are 100, the yalue pi which it is difficult tp compute. Mapuineuv. — two steam engines employed fn pumping and Winding, with an aggregate of g horae power \ two whins and pulleys, one whip, fflO sluices and toms, 5 water wheels, 70 hydraulic hoses, IQ pumpa, 200 sluice boxes, 12 quicksilver and compound qradlce. S steam engines used in crushing, in the aggregate 52 horsepower, 10 cashing machines (75 stamp heads), 5 water wheels, 3 whins and pulleyg, two whips, The approximate v»nip of the machinery and plant is Lpo,o(lQ. Tl]o number of square miles of auriferous ground actually worked upon is eight. European : Clyde, 100 ; Cromwell, 500; Alexandra, 200 ; Nevis, 150; total, 950, engaged in alluvial mining. In Cromwell, 150 Europeans are employed in quartz mining. Chinese: Clyde, 50; Cromwell, 200; Alexandra, 150; Nevis, 200; total, 600, all engaged in alluvial mining. Prices of provisions, etc. : Nearly the same as Dunedin.
