Christchurch. February 14. A fire occurred in Colombo street shortly after midnight, yesterday. It originated in a stable at the rear of Tremayne’s fruit shop, and the buildings being composed of old timber* the flames spread very rapidly to
Peacock and Toomer’s boot manufactory; Oliver’s greengrocery ; Atack, general grocer ; Cooper, tailor ; Ravenhill, grocer; Tompkins, tinsmith ; and a small house occupied by Mrs Rice. The tire-engines arrived promptly, but the hose of one of the steamers burst several times, owing to the great distance the water had to be forced through the hose.
