Christchurch. February 14. A fire occurred in Colombo street shortly after midnight, yesterday. It originated in a stable at the rear of Tremayne’s fruit shop, and the buildings being composed of old timber* the flames spread very rapidly to

Peacock and Toomer’s boot manufactory; Oliver’s greengrocery ; Atack, general grocer ; Cooper, tailor ; Ravenhill, grocer; Tompkins, tinsmith ; and a small house occupied by Mrs Rice. The tire-engines arrived promptly, but the hose of one of the steamers burst several times, owing to the great distance the water had to be forced through the hose. Pumping on the flames was therefore not quite so quickly accomplished as hitherto, and all the buildings were in flames before the three engines had got into play. The fire did not, however, spread after this. The total loss is estimated at about L3,ofto. The insurances are —South British, LGOO ; New Zealand, L 300; London and Liverpool, LISO ; Victoria, LIOO. Mrs Atack’s case is a very sad one. She is a widow, with several chi'dren, and is uninsured. She had had some policies in the Liverpool, London, and Globe Office, which expired last month. Her loss is about L3OO. The fire only lasted about half-an-hour. The Fire f olice saved a good deal of property. A presentation of a beautiful silver tea and coffee service was made to Captain Jenkins, of the ship John Knox, yesterday evening, in recognition of his conduct in saying eight persons from the wreck of the ship < ity of Newcastle, wrecked in Cook straits in Noveraber last. The Superintendent made the presentation, and a large number of persons, including most of the influential city merchants, were nresent.

The Hauhaus in tne Aotae and Kawhia districts have resolved to start all their flour mills again. Three will be started at once—one at Arahiri, Waikato, one at Kangitane. on the south head of the Hawbea, and one in Aoka Harbor. The necessary repairs are being made by the native tradesmen. When the mills get to work, vessels will be admitted into the harbors, and the aukiti forgotten. In a week or ten days the mills will be at work. Waka Taki and family are leaving otl for TokaDgattllltu. shares in the National B ink have, been applied for to the number of 14,119, exclusive of the Thames applications.

Wellington, February 13. Messrs Brogden and Co have been allowed to reconsider their tender for the Moeraki and Waitakiline.
