The Bruce Herald learns that an examination instituted by the Provincial Government into the condition of the Coal Point Mine, and the plant connected therewith has disclosed such an amount of waste and carelessness, that the intention of again leasing the property flag been abandoned. Yesterday afternoon, after the sailing of ! the fteWwH 4 , a very heavy tout ivas drawn,
by one of Farlie’s engines, on the Port Cbalmera railway, to Dunedin. It was a mixed train, consisting of seven passenger carriages, all tilled, seventeen trucks loaded with 120 tons of goods, and the guard’s van. The t; aiu left the station at Port Chalmers at 4.7 p.m. About two miles from Port Chalmers it was brought nearly to a stand-still while rising an incline of 1 in 70 in order to allow one of the employes to reach his home, and, notwithstanding the adverse gradient, ai soon as steam was turned on again, with perfect ease it recovered its velocity. An additional 100 tons may be safely added to the estimate of the load drawn by the engine for dead weight. The pressure gauge at starting showed 1201bs to the inch, and on arrival at Dunedin it was 1051bs. There is every reason to believe the engine is capable of drawing double the weight with ease. Lart evening “ Bolphegor ” or, as the bill has it, “ Woman’s Constancy,” was played at the Princess Theatre to a somewhat thin house. The piece ran Somewhat flatly throughout, and was followed by the amusing farce of “ The Captain’s not A-Miss,” in which Mr Musgrave took the part of General Stormwell ; Mr Clinton, Captain Daring ; Mr W, Hill, John Stock; Mrs W. Hill, Emily (disguised as Captain Daring) ; Miss Bushe, “Fanny” (disguished as John Stock); and Miss vvillis that of Mary. Mr Cripps impersonated thecharacterof Holland, the keeper of an inn, at which the foregoim* personages met, and played bin part faithfully and well. immen-e amusement was elicited by the doubling of the pans between >irs Hill ami Mr Clinton, and Mis° Bushe and Mr Hill, coupled wi hj the ridic Join discovery by Miss Willis as Mary, that the redoubtable and daring military officer was only a woman. The farce throughout excited most uproarious laughter, and sent the audience away in good humour. The programme will be repeated this evening.
If the Provincial Government is so poor that it carnet afford to spend the small sura required to pay for an aavertisemeut in the recognised advertis ng mediums ; so. that the public at large may be made aware of the date of the Education Board meetings, we will oblige the department by making the intimation gratis, for we feel certain that not one out of every hundred persons sees the paltry announcement that appears in that miserable publication, the Gazette. There was a meeting of the Board yesterday, but most of the business trans acted was of a routine character. Tho allowance of the female * teacher at the Blue Spur school was increase ! by LlO ; the application of the junior master of the High school for increase of salary was declined, pending a vote of the Provincial i ouncil; Lls was voted to the Moruingtuu Comm ttee; L2O to the Grove Bush fCommittee ; LSO to Weatherstones ; 60 to Kawarau, to aid the establishment of a school there; L 95 to Kaikorai, towards the salaries of a second master and pupil teacher, and for additional school fittings. Arrow, Waihola, Blueßpur, and Port Molyneux were postponed, pending the decision of the Provincial Council on the whole subject of school buildings. The Dunedin Athemeum’s application to be allowed to obtain books on the same terms as other public libraries was declined, the opinion of the Board being that it was never contemplated by the Provincial Council to include the Athenaeum iu the library scheme. The Board intimated that it had no power to interfere between Mr Allen and the Green Island School Committee, and informed the former that the appointment of teacher was one to be made by the committee, and not by the Board.
